Typically, you are looking for branches 1 ½ inches (4 cm.) thick or bigger. Trim these older branches out from their base on the weigela plant. Weigelas are prone to winter dieback. Carefully examine plants in late winter/early spring and prune out any dead wood. Late spring or early summer is recommended for weigela pruning- whenever the last flowers have finished blooming.
