Tree and Stump Removal. The City of Palo Alto manages approximately 37, trees on City property including along streets, in parks, and around city facilities. The Urban Forestry Section provides all required care (using both City and contract resources) for public trees during the tree’s lifespan including planting, pruning, line clearing and tree removal.
Oct 27, Regulated Trees. Regulated trees are specific species and categories of trees identified in our ordinance that are protected (Title 8, Palo Alto Municipal Code).
These trees must be maintained in accordance with regulations and require permits for pruning, removal or any activities that might impact them. Regulated trees can fall under three broad categories; public trees, protected public and private trees, and designated public and private trees. The City may contact residents about trees that qualify for the Right Tree Right Place program, which allows for the free removal and replacement of trees interfering with power lines.

Signs of diseases include: branches dying off, discolored leaves, and the lack of veins in them, fungus growing on the branches or trunk, and odd looking bumps on the tree’s bark.

A Tree Removal Permit is required for: 1. Any tree with a main stem or trunk that measures forty (40) inches or greater in circumference at a height of twenty‐four (24) inches or two (2) feet above natural grade. 2. Any tree within a public street or public right‐of‐way, regardless of size.
